One of the most distinctive ships in the U.S. military is coming to downtown Pensacola this spring.
The USCGC Eagle, the Coast Guard's three-masted training barque, will berth at Plaza de Luna in May. The Pensacola CRA voted Monday to waive its docking fees, clearing the way for the visit.
The Eagle has been in continuous service since 1946, when the U.S. acquired it from Germany after World War II. At 295 feet long with 23 sails and more than 22,000 square feet of canvas, it is a working tall ship, cadets from the Coast Guard Academy learn seamanship and navigation on its decks.
The CRA also approved a separate docking fee waiver for the USCGC Dolphin, another Coast Guard vessel scheduled at Plaza de Luna in May.
The Eagle typically opens to public boarding when in port. Specific dates and public access details had not been announced as of Monday's meeting.
