The University of West Florida track and field program qualified three athletes to the NCAA Division II South Regional this week, the program's best performance at that event in its history, with marks in the 400-meter hurdles, the triple jump and the shot put earning the entries.

The timing carries weight beyond the results sheet. This is the program's final season in Division II before UWF's full transition to NCAA Division I athletics begins in the fall. A program-record regional qualifier haul in a transition year is not coincidental, it reflects athletes choosing to make their last season at this level count for something.

That matters for the coaching staff now selling prospective Division I athletes on a program in the early stages of a major institutional bet. A track record of competitive excellence in the final Division II season gives recruiters a tangible answer to the skepticism that comes with any transition program: these athletes came here, they competed hard, they performed at the highest level available to them.

UWF's athletics operation has been one of the more decorated in Division II nationally. The university has won 11 national championships and 136 conference titles across its programs. The football program, founded in 2016, won a national title within four seasons of fielding its first team. That institutional history gives context to the Division I move, this is not a program reaching beyond its means, but one that has consistently performed at the top of its competitive level and is making a calculated step up.

The South Regional runs April 17-18 in Tallahassee. All three UWF qualifiers are competitive for top finishes. Results will be available at NCAA.com following the meet.
